Your Most Common Coffee Questions Answered!

This Sunday, September 29, is National Coffee Day, and in celebration of one of our favorite holidays, we’re giving our fans a behind-the-scenes look at all-things coffee at Dunkin’! Be sure to follow along all week for a special blog series featuring exclusive National Coffee Day content.

In honor of one of our favorite holidays, we asked our fans on Instagram to share their coffee questions for a chance to have them answered by our Coffee Team in the Dunkin’ Test Kitchen. We took the most frequently asked questions submitted by fans and sat down with our coffee experts: Heidi Curry, Janet Rock, Jim Cleaves, and Kelly German from our Research and Development team. Check out our Q&A below to see if your question was answered. Chances are you will learn something new about our favorite brew!

Where do you get the beans from?

Jim Cleaves, Research and Development Manager: We get our beans from South and Central America. We continue to explore additional sources and expand in these areas to maintain consistency from Tree to Cup.

What is your fave Dunkin’ flavor shot?

Kelly German, Sr. Research and Development Technologist: My favorite flavor shot has to be Raspberry. It pairs so well with Iced Coffee and our Green Tea. Sometimes I like to pair our Raspberry flavor shot with a Mocha flavor swirl for a chocolate raspberry mocha latte Dunkin’ menu hack.

How does roasting the coffee beans work?

Janet Rock, Research and Development Manager: Roasting coffee is similar to popping popcorn or grilling a steak. It’s really a heat source transforming the chemical composition of the green bean into the roasted coffee we know through the Maillard reaction. As a part of that reaction, you are pulling out different tastes and flavors. It’s part art and part science wrapped into one.

What’s something new I can try?

Heidi Curry, Senior Manager of Research and Development: Definitely give our Cinnamon Sugar Pumpkin Signature Latte a try. This takes lattes to the next level. It is available hot or iced, and features pumpkin and cinnamon flavors, topped with whipped cream, a caramel drizzle and cinnamon sugar topping for a tasty new seasonal sip.

What’s the difference between Iced Coffee and Cold Brew?

Janet Rock, Research and Development Manager: These coffee beverages are different in the way they are brewed and as a result the way that they taste. Cold brew is 100% cold and steeped for 12 hours, leaving you with a smooth and rich finish and chocolatey notes. Iced Coffee is brewed hot with double strength, and then poured over ice resulting in that bright acidity, making it beautifully complemented by flavor shots and swirls. For more info, check out this blog post!

What’s the best way to drink coffee?

Kelly German, Sr. Research and Development Technologist: Any way you like!
